4 December 2024: Sustainable Consumption and Production Outreach in Asia – The Next Five (SCP Outreach in Asia)

Dr. Chatree Phurat, Director of the Green Label and Environmental Label Division, and Khun Waewta Bawornthaweepanya, a researcher in the same division, participated in the closing event of the SCP Outreach in Asia project and the launch of the environmental label for Bhutan (September 12, 2024) and Laos (December 4, 2024). The event showcased the project’s achievements in developing and promoting green public procurement of environmentally friendly goods and services by the public sector, as well as the environmental labels of Bhutan and Laos. The aim is to raise awareness and support the use of environmentally friendly products and services within the countries, while also contributing to the achievement of SDG Goal 12.

SCP Outreach in Asia was supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) of the Federal Republic of Germany, and was implemented by GIZ in collaboration with partners in each country. The project’s objective is to support government agencies in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka in developing and implementing environmentally friendly procurement practices and environmental labeling systems. This support encompasses the development of policies and legislation; the enhancement of technical guidance and capacity (such as upgrading operational standards); the compilation of lists of environmentally friendly products and services; the development of requirements and criteria for environmental label certification; as well as training and raising awareness among buyers and suppliers in all five countries.

The Green Label and Environmental Label Division of the Thai Environment Institute participated in the SCP Outreach in Asia project as trainers. They conducted workshops on environmental labeling in accordance with ISO 14024 (Type I Environmental Label), on developing requirements for environmentally friendly products, on facility inspections, and on the procedures for certifying environmental labels for representatives from Bhutan and Laos. In addition, they shared their experiences in implementing green public procurement (GPP) in Thailand to serve as a guideline for future operations in both Bhutan and Laos.
